HENRI PETIT BOURGEOIS SAUVIGNON BLANC 2018

HENRI PETIT BOURGEOIS SAUVIGNON BLANC 2018 There are many styles of Sauvignon Blanc and this one from the Loire Valley in France is a very popular one. If you are not a fan of the popular New Zealand style you should try this one. Miner-al and floral elements typical of Loire whites come through nicely here. It matches well with so many things…including goat cheese.

There is never any disappointment when drinking this wine. Garnacha aka Grenache is a great all around red grape and in this case comes from the Spanish region of Aragon. HESS PANTHERA CHARDONNAY RUSSIAN RIVER 2016

HESS PANTHERA CHARDONNAY RUSSIAN RIVER 2016

According to the winemaker Dave Guffy “the word Panthera is believed to be of East Asian origin, meaning the yellowish animal or golden yellow. We have crafted a striking golden-yellow Chardonnay that is opulent in style and beautifully textured. This inaugural vintage offers yellow stone fruit aromas that lead to delicious flavors of peach, white pear and grilled pineapple. The gorgeous frame of fruit encompasses layers of well-integrated toasty oak and hints of crème brulee… [it] is unctuous but focused with a bright core that persists through a satisfying, long finish”. This winemaker has made wine for some other really great wineries so we are trusting him on this one.

SKYSIDE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2017

SKYSIDE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2017

Skyside is produced by Newton Vineyard—a high-end/high-quality winery. This is great news as it allows you to sample the quality of this winery at a much lower price. This wine is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 6% Syrah and 3% Petite Syrah. According to the winery the Cabernets “from Mendocino and Sonoma shape the blend’s structure with a darker fruit profile and lingering tannins to lengthen the palate. Grapes from Lake, Solano and Napa add lift to the aromatics, fullness to the mid-palate, enhance overall concentration and provide a red/purple fruit pro-file”. It is a wine that has “aromas of violets, blueberry and plum fruits, clove/anise spices, coffee and chocolate. The wine fills the palate and lingers with chocolate and darker fruits that meet the bold tannins”.

HESS COLLECTION ALLOMI CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2016

HESS COLLECTION ALLOMI CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2016

This Napa Valley Cabernet is made by the same winery that makes the Panthera Chardonnay (see above). Although labeled as a Cabernet, this wine will interest those who like blends; it consists of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Sirah, 4% Malbec, 2% Petite Verdot and 2% Merlot. It received great accolades including 90 Points from Wine Spectator which points out that it is “ a solid, juicy style, with bramble accents and earthy grip carrying dark currant and plum fruit flavors. Fresh savory notes add more energy to the finish. The fruit is unencumbered by toast. Drink now through 2025”. It may be wise to get a few extra bottles to see how it develops over time.

COULY-DUTHEIL CHINON ROUGE “LA COULEE AUTOMNALE” 2016

COULY-DUTHEIL CHINON ROUGE “LA COULEE AUTOMNALE” 2016

Do you want a bit of a changeup in your red wine game? Want to try a Cabernet that is not Sauvignon? This is a Cabernet Franc from the French region of Chinon located in the Loir Valley. This winery has a great reputation and graces some of the best tables in France. The Wine Enthusiast says “pure fruit gives this wine a fresh character. It is warm, lightly tannic, bursting with rich berry fruits and acidity. With its soft texture, the wine is likely to be ready soon”. Don’t miss out on a wine that the winery says can be kept for 3-5 years. The Baden region that this wine comes from is just a few miles from the French border, in Germany’s southernmost region. Joachim Heger and his work have revolutionized the potential of this ancient wine region. Heger practices sustainable farming and the wine is put into “big oak bar-rel + neutral barrique”—this is important as we don’t want new oak over-influencing a grape as delicate as Pinot Noir. The wine “offers tremendous value. This is a liter-bottle of fresh, juicy, energetic Pinot Noir with great balance that is dangerously drinkable and ridiculously affordable”. Oh, and in case you missed it, this liter bottle offers you 1/3 more wine than your average wine bottle.

HIPPOLYTE REVERDY SANCERRE 2018

HIPPOLYTE REVERDY SANCERRE 2018

White wine should not be relegated to only the summer and Sauvignon Blanc to only the hottest months. This wine is made in the Loire Valley, France from the aforementioned grape. According to the importer Kermit Lynch it is possible the Hippolyte Reverdy’s family has been making wine since the 1600s! This is really fantastic wine. Per Kermit Lynch it is “very pure Sancerre aroma, generous, fresh, without grassy edges. The palate is expansive and the finish is dry and lipsmackingly good. One of the things I love about it is that it leaves on the lips, not the palate, not the throat, but on your lips, a fresh little lemony whisper which makes it a fabulous com-plement to simple fish dishes”.

GLENDALOUGH ROSE GIN

GLENDALOUGH ROSE GIN

Gin can be a polarizing spirit. Lucky for us we live in an age where juniper isn’t the only defining quality of Gin. This Rose Gin is only one of the choices available from this English distillery. The distillery focuses on for-aging for ingredients, making them an unusual producer. This Rose gin is a re-distillation of their Wild Gin (the one with foraged ingredients) with added fruits, flowers and spices; along with that they add rose petals. They use three different types of roses to achieve complexity: Wild Rose from Wicklow mountains, fragrant Heritage roses, and Damask Rose. Once they have slowly distilled it, they infuse the gin with more rose petals in order to give it the color. This gin of course is not just for summer or a Gin and Tonic. It would be great in any drink that would let floral notes shine.

TRIGNON MUSCAT BEAUMES DE VENISE 2010

TRIGNON MUSCAT BEAUMES DE VENISE 2010

The increasing popularity of sweet wines such as some Rieslings, Moscato d’Asti and others means that it is certainly time to talk about this wine. The grape here is the beautifully aromatic Muscat Petit Grains. It produces a well-balanced white wine in the Rhone region of Beaumes de Venise. This wine can be consumed as an aperitif—it is certainly light enough in body to not be cloying. It can of course be used as a dessert wine. There is a versatility to this wine and it would do well in cocktails also. It would pair well with a fruit tart. The Trignon family describes it as having “ bursting with aromas of honeysuckle and peaches”.

LUSTAU FINO JARANA NV

LUSTAU FINO JARANA NV

Sherry is one of the most misunderstood wines in the world. Most people think it is a sweet-ish wine that someone’s grandmother used to drink. While it is true that a lot of grandmothers did drink some sweet Sherries, the fact is that Sherry ranges from very dry to very sweet. There is a Sherry for every occasion and every meal. Sherry comes from the region of Jerez in southwestern Spain. The method of making sherry is complex and so are the flavors. This particular one is made from the Palomino grape in the town of Jerez de la Frontera. The Lustau company has a stellar reputation for its range of sherries. This particular offering is “fresh, mineral and pungent on the nose with almonds and bakery notes. Dry and crisp, yet rich and with a full finish”. What can you pair this with? Lustau recommends fresh seafood as well as smoked fish. Putting it together with the classic Spanish Iberico ham would work. We think one of the tastiest snacks is drinking this Fino while nib-bling on Marcona almonds.

ICE

One of the most important aspects of making drinks and serving wine is temperature. We don’t often think about temperature unless the temperature is in some way not right.

Think about the cube of ice you need for the shaken martini or the block of ice you need for the summer party punch. Either way you want ice that is pure, clean and brilliant.

While at many other places you are buying ice made by someone else, at Towne we have our own icehouse. We make our own beautiful ice.

The ice is available in cubes. Not only is Towne your source for fine spirits, excellent wine and craft beer of all types, we are the place to ensure that all of those things are at the right temperature.

Ice. Ice. Baby.
