CUNE RIOJA ROSADO 2018

The popularity of rosé has increased, so now it is stocked year round and now we are entering prime time. This rosé from Spain is made from Garnacha, Tempranillo and Viura. The gentleness of the pressing and the avoidance of further pressing with skins and seeds assures us that it is an elegant wine with no bitter edges. You’ll find “aromas of fruit such as apricot and peach”. Definitely one to purchase by the case and have on hand all summer long.

NICOLAS BARREYRE BORDEAUX 2015

Some people think that Bordeaux is just for expensive wines—not so. There are so many value bottles of Bordeaux and here is one of them. This is the second wine of Chateau Barreyre which means the vines are a bit younger. It is described as having “nose of red and dark fruits; soft, well-rounded texture on the palate”.

CA’FURLAN PROSECCO CUVEE BEATRICE NV

CA’FURLAN PROSECCO CUVEE BEATRICE NV

What would spring be without Prosecco! This bubbly from Italy has had quite a rise in the past few years and with good reason. It is tasty, easy to drink and incredibly affordable. Made from the grape Glera, it is gently handled so as to preserve the aromas and flavors that Prosecco is known for. It has been featured as a Best Buy in Wine Spectator and described as “balanced and lightly juicy”. “This creamy Prosecco offers textbook notes of white peach, almond skin and orchard blossom, as well as lemon zest and spice details on the finish.” Also you are going to need a good amount of bottles because according to the importer’s website, June 11-16th is National Prosecco Week.

PREVOSTINI RISERVA VALTELLINA SUPERIORE DOCG 2012

PREVOSTINI RISERVA VALTELLINA SUPERIORE DOCG 2012

We have written about Prevostini’s wines before. If you look at some of the photos on their website, it may shock you to see how green and lush the hillside vineyards are in that very northern part of Italy. What may also shock you is the incredibly high quality of this 100% Nebbiolo comes from the highest vineyards they have. Valtellina Italy is very close to Switzerland. The grapes are late harvested, carefully sifted through to ensure only the cleanest, healthiest grapes. The wine spends 30 months in oak barrels followed by 12 months in bottle. It has a “scent with extraordinary subtlety combining undercurrents of raspberry jam and roses”. This wine is a keeper…

TIKAL “PATRIOTA” MALBEC/BONARDA 2014

TIKAL “PATRIOTA” MALBEC/BONARDA 2014

This wine has been on the 2015 Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list. While awards may mean something to some people, this wine goes beyond that. It is made from 40% Bonarda and 60% Malbec in the Mendoza region of Argentina and the average age of the vines is 78 years old. What makes this wine special is that it was founded by Ernesto Catena—a legend in the Argentinean wine industry. This is a big, bold wine “yet very balanced with luscious layers of raspberry, cherry, and cocoa flavors. Just a hint of baking spice at the end brings it all together”.

$20.99/bottle

GROTH SAUVIGNON BLANC, NAPA VALLEY 2017

GROTH SAUVIGNON BLANC, NAPA VALLEY 2017

In many ways Sauvignon Blanc means warm weather, outdoor activities and sipping this delicious wine from Napa Valley. While it is mostly Sauvignon Blanc, there is an addition of 19% Semillon; not an unusual addition to SB. It tends to give the wine a richness and mouthfeel. They also grow these grapes so they can exhibit “melon and fruit characteristics in both flavors and aromas”. The 2017 was a difficult vintage but in the end the winery expressed that it was a “gloriously ripe and expressive crop–just the way we like it”.

FRANK FAMILY CHARDONNAY, CARNEROS 2017

FRANK FAMILY CHARDONNAY, CARNEROS 2017

Chardonnay is still the most popular white wine that we know of. It certainly makes its appearance in the stable of a lot of wineries. The reason is that Chardonnay is easy to like, can be made in a variety of styles, locations and price points. Here we present a Chardonnay from the Carneros region of California. Carneros is well known for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. As the winery will tell you, the vineyard in the Napa-Carneros area is influenced with the “predominant maritime influence of the Pacific Ocean the cool temperature, fog and wind make Carneros ideally suited for growing cool climate varietals”. The wine has “aromas of toasted brioche, baking spices, and candied lemon rind. On the palate the Carneros Chardonnay is full-bodied and creamy yet balanced by lively acidity; with nuanced flavors of yellow apple, lemon curd, baked pear, melon, and subtle hints of oak toast”.

UNIBROUE “LA FIN DU MONDE” BELGIAN STYLE TRIPLE ALE

UNIBROUE “LA FIN DU MONDE” BELGIAN STYLE TRIPLE ALE

Belgian style beers are some of the most drinkable beers around. This offering from Canada’s storied Unibroue is 9% alcohol and according to the brewery it can age. It is meant to be savored and enjoyed with deliberation; this is not a beer meant to be consumed quickly. On the nose it has a “floral bouquet…with aromas of honey, spices, coriander, malt and alcohol”. On the palate it has “notes of grains, fruit and spice, followed by a smooth, dry finish. A perfect balance of sugar, acidity, bitterness, spices and alcohol” 19 IBU.

MAD RIVER DISTILLERS “MAD APPLE” BRANDY

MAD RIVER DISTILLERS “MAD APPLE” BRANDY

You probably already know that apple cider has become very popular and offers a range from dry to sweet. What you should also know is that apple brandy is a great alternative to what one might call “regular” brandy. It is made from 100% Vermont apples at a distillery that was started in 2011. Originally the owners wanted to grow grapes but Vermont can be unforgiving for grapes. The owners had an interest in Calvados (an apple based spirit from Normandy France) and thus Mad River was born. Because there is no sweetness in this brandy, it makes for great after dinner sipping or as an ingredient in a cocktail. This “aromatic brandy has fresh apple notes on the nose with oak spice and vanilla on the palate, followed by a crisp apple finish”. The following is a recipe courtesy of the distillery.

$42.99/bottle

Mad Apple Old Fashioned

1 tsp maple syrup
2 dashes angostura bitters
2 oz Mad Apple
Stir maple syrup, bitters and Mad Apple over ice. Strain into a rocks glass over ice. Garnish with apple or an orange swath.

ICE

One of the most important aspects of making drinks and serving wine is temperature. We don’t often think about temperature unless the temperature is in some way not right.

Think about the cube of ice you need for the shaken martini or the block of ice you need for the summer party punch. Either way you want ice that is pure, clean and brilliant.

While at many other places you are buying ice made by someone else, at Towne we have our own icehouse. We make our own beautiful ice.

The ice is available in cubes. Not only is Towne your source for fine spirits, excellent wine and craft beer of all types, we are the place to ensure that all of those things are at the right temperature.

Ice. Ice. Baby.
