2016 Cotes du Rhone wines are an almost automatic choice when looking for an easy drinking wine that can still stand up to food. That’s asking a lot from a wine but this one really delivers. This blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault makes this wine a winner. The winery describes the finish as having a “harmonious finish that is at once elegant and flavorful”.

Chenin Blanc is a chameleon wine that can be so many things and Viognier is lovely and aromatic. Together they give us a floral bouquet, plus “citrus, tropical fruit, and fresh cut green herbs”. This white wine is beautifully fruit forward and a lovely choice to come home and relax with.

KEENAN CHARDONNAY 2014
The Spring Mountain District of Napa doesn’t exactly come to mind when people are talking about California wine—it should. The 180 acres are located on the eastern side of the Mayacamas mountains at an elevation of 1700 feet. It is a tough place to grow grapes and that toughness is what contributes to the great quality of Keenan (they also produce Mer-lot and Cabernet). This 100% Chardonnay was fermented and aged in French and American oak barrels. The finish “shows citrus, ripe pear and green apple in the nose. Hints of lush white peach are noticed as the wine opens up. The sur-lie aging has added richness and complexity, and a touch of toasty oak returns on the finish”. This wine is a great testament to the idea that white wines do age. White wine does not need to be consumed when very young. It received 93 Points from Wine & Spirits Magazine and only 2,500 cases were produced.

Bubbles. Bubbles. Bubbles. Nothing says happiness like bubbly drinks. Also, nothing signals a good time like Champagne. It is the quintessential drink of romance, weddings, and all kinds of celebrations. Sure, it is February and Valentine’s Day lies within it but we would recommend this bottle of loveliness any time of year. The reason? Well, one reason is that it is from the famous Champagne house Heidsieck (not to be confused with Piper-Heidsieck) and another is that the price is incredible. The price is not just incredible, it is incredible for a top house, this isn’t second rate Champagne. The Champagne region is just northeast of Paris and for the most part the grapes that go into Champagne are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and/or Pinot Meunier. It is a complex process and the bubbles are formed in each bottle with each Champagne house having its own style. This particular Champagne is “powerful and generous, almost woody and spicy, characterized by in-tense aromatic richness, with toasted, buttery, and wine-rich aromas”. You don’t need champagne flutes for this wine, a lovely wine glass will do the trick.
CAPE MENTELLE SHIRAZ/CABERNET 2016
Did you know the winery Cloudy Bay (maker of the famous Sauvignon Blanc) has a sister winery that also makes excellent wines! Western Australia is home to the Margaret River wine region. It is well known for its outstanding quality of wines that come out of the region. This combination of Shiraz and Cabernet combines some of the best flavors and aromas of both wines. Cedar notes and berry flavors meander on the palate while the very approachable tannins make it a great companion to chops.
CHATEAU BLAIGNAN MEDOC 2014
This chateau dates back to the 14th century. Its history is long, and the vines have been planted there for what seems like forever. Yet it went thru many changes—wars, ownership, planting of new vines. In 2004 it got a new owner and renovations were put into place. The wine is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. The wine has a “ruby dark col-or. Fresh, soft and sweet ripe nose of black currant followed by spicy notes of white pepper, fresh tobacco and cedar…medium bodied wine shows elegant tannins. It is very approachable and matches perfectly with steaks, pork loin, poultry, pasta, hamburgers, and barbecue”.
PATRICIA GREEN CELLARS RESERVE PINOT NOIR 2017
You may be forgiven for never having heard of Patricia Green Cellars. It seems to have been a bit of a secret here on the east coast. The winery was started by two friends who have created an incredible selection of single vineyard Pinot Noirs from the Willamette Valley. They wanted to put together a collection of vineyards that honed in on their philosophy: Do what needs to be done. The idea was to make wine but not “over-make” wine. The reviews have been phenomenal. This Pinot Noir is a great intro-duction to the range of wines available from this winery. This wine is modeled on the concept of a Bourgogne in that it comes from very good vine-yards and thus giving you a good price for an excellent Burgundy-esque wine. The supplier for this wine says, “there will, of course, be some spice and barrel tannin, but this wine has way more than enough guts and stuffing to handle the 33% new barrel with 51% of the barrels being completely neutral there is a balancing yin to the yang”. Only 4,121 cases were made.
CHATEAU LARIBOTTE SAUTERNES 2015
There are people who say they don’t like sweet wines and then when they taste a Sautern are surprised that they like it…we are not. Well-made sweet wines that have the right amount of sweetness and acidity keep us going back for more. This wine composed of 90% Semillon, 8% Sauvignon Blanc, and 2% Muscadelle is excellent at the start of a meal with foie gras or at the end of a meal with a light dessert (no chocolate please). It is described as having an “attractive complex nose of acacias, white flowers, lemon, and a touch of honey. Light, fruity mouth with flavors of candied fruits and dry apricots”.

Italy is a wine lovers dreamland. There’s not a region of Italy that doesn’t grow grapes. When you look at a wine map of Italy it seems like every square inch of it is covered with vines. Puglia aka Apulia is the “heel” part of Italy. Primitivo di Manduria is well known to be a rich generous wine and here it has a “ruby red color, enriched with garnet reflections…generous perfume, which recalls plums and ripe red fruits…a velvety texture, dry and spicy”. In case you were wondering Primitivo is Zinfandel. Yes, the same Zinfandel that is grown in California (it is a very long story and worth looking up) …so get a bottle of this and get your history lesson at the same time.
KURAYOSHI 8 YEAR JAPANESE WHISKY
Whisky fans are known to go to extremes to find special bottles. You won’t have to go very far to try this outstanding bottle of Japanese whisky. The Japanese have been making whisky for a while and have won numerous awards for it. This is a 100% malted bar-ley whisky. Perhaps one of the most amazing things about this whisky is that “the spirits themselves have been sourced from distilleries around Scotland before making their journey to Japan, where they are blended with Japanese-distilled malted barley then aged (3-18 years). The whisky is then proofed down with the famously soft ground waters of Tottori Prefecture”. No caramel has been added it is non-chill filtered. Experience Japan and Scotland in one bottle.
